Bad DJ Tee

I am a bad DJ. And that’s okay.

I have been completely obsessed with music from a very young age. I can play the piano and have produced hundreds of pieces of music. I’ve approximately 3,000 playlists on iTunes and several hundred vinyl records. This obsession has mistakenly led me to believe that I have the right to be a DJ without really putting much effort into the craft.

The truth is I’m just not a good DJ. In fact, I’m a bad one. I’m sloppy, impatient, stubborn, and my taste ranges from fringe to antagonistic. If I get booked to play at a night the contrarian in me wants to play a completely different genre to what’s expected. I always seem to clear the dance floor within 2 tracks.

This truth was made apparent at a recent party where one of my oldest friends played his first ever set in his late 30s. The excitement and enthusiasm - not to mention the many, many hours of practice - were immediately apparent. He absolutely smashed out two hours of perfectly mixed jungle and it was a joy to watch someone unearth a new passion this far into adulthood and germinate that passion with tireless dedication.

Being a bad DJ doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop. I’m a firm believer that everyone should find at least one hobby they’re not naturally good at and do it anyway. It's good for you like eating your greens.
